Transformations
Reshaping what you just dictated — available on Plus and Pro.
Transformations take text you've already dictated and rewrite it a different way — after you're done speaking, never while you're still talking. They're available on Plus and Pro; see Plans.
The four built-in transformations
While a capture is still settled — that is, in the seconds right after Tiune types, before you move on — you can reshape it:
- Polish — cleans up the phrasing while keeping your meaning intact.
- Professional — reshapes it into a more polished, work-appropriate tone.
- Shorter — trims it down to the essentials.
- Translate — renders it in another language.
Each one has a real keyboard chord:
| Transformation | macOS | Windows |
|---|---|---|
| Polish | ⌥⇧1 | Ctrl+Shift+1 |
| Professional | ⌥⇧2 | Ctrl+Shift+2 |
| Shorter | ⌥⇧3 | Ctrl+Shift+3 |
| Translate | ⌥⇧4 | Ctrl+Shift+4 |
These chords are registered only while a capture is settled, which is the only moment there's anything to transform. Outside those few seconds the keys belong to whatever app wants them — Tiune isn't holding them hostage in the background.
The chords differ per platform on purpose. On Windows they deliberately avoid Alt, because the Windows dictation key is right Alt held on its own — an Alt-based transform chord would start a dictation on its way to being pressed.
Your own transformations
You can tune any of the four presets, or create your own: give it a name, a category, and a plain-English instruction — for example, "rewrite this as a three-line standup update." The four chords run whichever instruction currently sits under those preset names, so retuning a preset retunes its chord too.
Why transformations need a connection
Unlike dictation, which always works offline, a transformation is done by an AI writing model that doesn't run on your machine — so it needs an internet connection every time. There's no offline version. See Offline Mode for the full picture of what does and doesn't need a network.
A related feature: matching the app you're writing in
Separately from transformations, Tiune's cleanup pass adjusts how it writes based on where your words are going — an email and a Slack reply want different sentences out of the same speech. It reads the shape of the fields around your cursor rather than the app name, and only a single one-word category ever leaves your machine.
That's covered in full in How Tiune Writes.
Regular dictation doesn't depend on any of this — it works fully offline, for everyone, free and unlimited.
